A unique microstructure of the fiber networks deposited from foam-fiber suspensions
2015
Abstract Fiber networks can be formed using aqueous foam as the suspending medium. The mean bubble size of the foam affects the resulting pore-size distribution of the fiber network. The foam–fiber interactions cause in particular an increase in the proportion of large micropores of the network, in comparison with the fiber networks that result from traditional water forming at a similar material density. Experiments were carried out for two different types of cellulose fiber, and characterization of the resulting pore structure was based on X-ray microtomography of the resulting fiber networks. The unique pore structure obtained with foam forming was reflected in various macroscopic proper…
Automatic Recognition and Analysis of Scanned Non-crimp Fabrics for Calculation of their Fluid Flow Permeability
2007
Automatic recognition of scanned images of distorted bi-axial fiber bundle arrangements is considered in order to obtain the overall permeability of the formed fiber network. Scanned images are pre-processed with color normalization followed by usage of a threshold to find the pixels belonging to the bundles, the threads keeping the bundles together, and the distinct gaps formed between the bundles. Since the scanned images virtually have a perfect grayscale, the intensity can be treated as a corresponding signal of the image. Next the regular character of the fiber network is investigated using Fourier analysis on the fiber bundles as well as on the threads. The direction, position, and s…
Analyses of Dual Polarization WDM and SCM Radio over Fiber and Radio over FSO for C-RAN Architecture
2016
Alterations in the Microstructure of the Anterior Mitral Valve Leaflet Under Physiological Stress
2012
An improved understanding of mitral valve (MV) function remains an important goal for determining mechanisms underlying valve disease and for developing novel therapies. Critical to heart valve tissue homeostasis is the valvular interstitial cells (VICs), which reside in the interstitium and maintain the extracellular matrix (ECM) through both protein synthesis and enzymatic degradation [1]. There is scant quantitative experimental data on the alterations of the MV fiber network reorganization as a function of load, which is critical for implementation of computational strategies that attempt to link this meso-micro scale phenomenon. The observed large scale deformations experienced by VICs…
Cladding-Pumped Erbium/Ytterbium Co-Doped Fiber Amplifier for C-Band Operation in Optical Networks
2021
Space-division multiplexing (SDM) attracts attention to cladding-pumped optical amplifiers, but they suffer from a low pump power conversion efficiency. To address this issue, ytterbium (Yb3+) and erbium (Er3+) co-doping is considered as an effective approach. However, it changes the gain profile of Er3+-doped fiber amplifiers and induces the gain difference between optical wavelengths in the C-band, significantly limiting the effective band of the dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) system. This paper is devoted to a detailed study of a cladding-pumped Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) through numerical simulations aiming to identify a configuration, before assembling a s…
Relaxation of wet paper by simulations and laboratory-scale experiments
2009
Numerical studies of fiber networks and experiments on wet paper show that tensile force relaxes linearly as a function of logarithmic time. Relaxation rate is faster for wet than dry paper. Simulated permanent deformation after relaxation is clearly higher than that measured in wet paper.
Insights into localized manipulation of organogel-related microcrystalline spherulite formation
2015
Abstract The formation processes of microcrystalline spherulitic fiber systems related to bile acid amides were determined to include dominant interface-related aspects, the role of which were studied in terms of potential manipulation and increased control over the overall structure of the networks. The nucleation and growth properties and aggregation of two lithocholyl amide derivatives were studied in several organic solvents using thermomicroscopy, as well as thermal control at macroscopic level. Nucleation/crystallization at interfaces was observed to act as the main route for the formation of microcrystalline fibers/solids in six gelator–solvent systems, in which spherulite formation …
A Method to Extract the Complete Fiber Network Topology of Planar Fibrous Tissues and Scaffolds
2010
Improving fabrication protocols and design strategies, investigating on how fibrous ECM and synthetic architectures affect cell morphology, metabolism and phenotypic expression, predicting mechanical behaviors, have increasingly become crucial goals in the understanding of native tissues and in the development of engineered tissue. In the present study, an image-based analysis approach that provides an automatic tool to fully characterize engineered tissue fiber network topology was developed. The following micro architectural features were detected: fiber angle distribution, fiber connectivity, fiber overlap spatial density, and fiber diameter. In order to demonstrate the potential of this…
Using the fibre structure of paper to determine authenticity of the documents: analysis of transmitted light images of stamps and banknotes.
2014
A novel method is presented for distinguishing postal stamp forgeries and counterfeit banknotes from genuine samples. The method is based on analyzing differences in paper fibre networks. The main tool is a curvelet-based algorithm for measuring overall fibre orientation distribution and quantifying anisotropy. Using a couple of more appropriate parameters makes it possible to distinguish forgeries from genuine originals as concentrated point clouds in two- or three-dimensional parameter space.
Characterization of dual-polarization analogue radio over fiber fronthaul for LTE C-RAN architecture
2016
